speaking of speaking

Speaking of vocabulary, Geoffrey Nunberg wrote a great commentary on vocabulary for Fresh Air today. Hear the commentary in Nunberg's own voice.

Nunberg refers to a study making the rounds lately, which allegedly claims that welfare mothers' vocabularies are the same size as the vocabularies of three-year-old children of non-welfare mothers. After noting that the actual study says no such thing, despite the pronouncements of numerous adminstration wonks, Nunberg comments on the enormous power to be granted (taken away), by attributing high (low) intelligence and cultural capital to certain groups -- in this case, welfare mothers.
