The owner of the gun that brought the death penalty back to the United States wants to sell it. Problem is, nobody’s taking him up on his asking price, so he’s having a contest:
If you can write the best 500-word essay—either in favor of or against the death penalty—the gun Gary Mark Gilmore used in the mid-1970s to commit two execution-style murders in Utah County can be yours.
According to the contest site, the cache of goodies that will go to the winner includes the evidence tag, still attached to the gun, documents describing the weapon, a VHS tape of The Executioner’s Song starring Tommy Lee Jones, and a Playboy magazine containing a death row interview with Gilmore.
The collection’s owner, Dennis Stilson, is hoping for five thousand entries to the essay contest, at a hundred bucks a pop.
